About the 28th MCPM

Dear colleagues, friends and mental health professionals,

The 28th MCPM will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton i-City Shah Alam. The MPA committee has chosen a theme in the hope that delegates can appreciate the advancement in mental health in the country.

Psychiatry in Malaysia began approximately more than sixty years ago. People with mental illness were treated then mainly in institutions and mental health services in very few government hospitals. There were many side effects associated with the medications used to treat patients with mental illness.

Psychiatry has come a long way. All government hospitals now provide mental health services, including the many tertiary education centres in the country. There are also many more psychiatrists, and many have specialised in areas other than general psychiatry. As the fraternity grows, so does the knowledge and experience, which hopefully will trickle into the community.

The MPA conference is a pivotal event where members can showcase their work and ideas to the broader community. The knowledge and insights shared during this event are invaluable, contributing to the ongoing progress in the field of psychiatry in Malaysia.

WELCOME ADDRESS

FROM THE PRESIDENT of MALAYSIAN PSYCHIATRY ASSOCIATION

Dear colleagues and friends,

Firstly, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for your invaluable participation in last year’s 27th MCPM, which was run concurrently with the 20th International Conference of the Pacific Rim College of Psychiatry (PRCP). Your active involvement and contributions to the various presentations were truly commendable.

The MPA committee is already preparing for the 28th MCPM, which will be held at the Double Tree by Hilton Shah Alam i-City, from October 12th to 13th. This year, the scientific committee has chosen the theme of ‘Embracing the Basics for the Future of Mental Health.’ The main objectives of the 28th MCPM are to reflect how psychiatry and mental health have evolved since the days of chlorpromazine and treating patients in institutions.

As such, we have also invited a special speaker. He worked in Malaysia in the 1990s and would be a good person to listen to as he shares his journey in psychiatry. The special speaker will be revealed shortly.

Also, last year, we saw a good number of local delegates wanting to present their work and experience. Their presentations were well received. As such, we are calling for abstract presentations for oral, symposium, and e-poster presentations.

Please block these critical dates in your calendar! Come and join us in Double Tree by Hilton Shah Alam i-City from October 12th to 13th. We rarely meet on such an educational, joyous, and sharing occasion; the MCPM is the one occasion for all Malaysian Psychiatrists!

WELCOME ADDRESS

FROM THE PRESIDENT-ELECT OF MALAYSIAN PSYCHIATRY ASSOCIATION & ORGANISING CHAIRPERSON

With great pleasure and anticipation,

I stand before you today as the Malaysian Psychiatry Association (MPA) President-Elect. Thank you for the confidence given to me to co-lead the association. As a form of appreciation, on behalf of the MPA committee, I am extending a heartfelt invitation to join us at our upcoming conference in 2024. Under the theme, "Embracing the Basics for the Future of Mental Health", this conference is not just an annual event but a pivotal moment in our collective journey towards a brighter, more inclusive future for mental health.

In a world where complexity is prevalent, we recognise the profound impact that embracing the basics can have on the trajectory of mental health care. The foundational principles of our field are the roots from which innovation and progress flourish. As we navigate today's and tomorrow's challenges, we often reference the roots, using the basics as fundamental aspects that form the bedrock of adequate mental health practice.

This conference invites us to revisit and celebrate our profession's core tenets and reflect on the timeless wisdom that has shaped psychiatry. We believe that embracing the basics lays the groundwork for a more sustainable and resilient future in mental health care. From evidence-based interventions to compassionate patient care, the basics serve as our compass, guiding us through the ever-evolving mental health landscape.

Our carefully curated program reflects our commitment to exploring the foundational elements that have stood the test of time while incorporating cutting-edge insights that pave the way for the future. Through engaging keynote presentations, interactive symposiums, and collaborative panel discussions, we aim to create an environment where knowledge is shared, relationships are forged, and a sense of unity prevails.

As we extend this invitation, we recognise the importance of your presence in shaping the narrative of the conference. Your unique perspectives, experiences, and expertise contribute to the richness of the discussions we hope to foster. We encourage clinicians, researchers, educators, and advocates to join us in this collective endeavour to rediscover the power of the basics in guiding us towards a more compassionate and effective mental health care system. Thus, we will open abstract submissions for interested presenters to share their knowledge and experience.

In 2024, let us unite as professionals and as a community united by our passion for mental health. This conference is an opportunity to rekindle the flame of our shared commitment, rejuvenate our collective spirit, and lay the foundation for a future where mental health is accessible, compassionate, and grounded in the timeless principles that define our noble field.

I extend my warmest invitation to each of you to participate in this transformative experience. Together, let us embrace the basics for the future of mental health and build a legacy that will resonate through the years to come.

Thank you, and I eagerly anticipate your presence at this momentous gathering.
